“Fight the good fight of faith, take hold of eternal life…” – 1 Timothy 6:12

What does it mean to fight the good fight of faith? This exhortation indicates that faith is not passive, but active.

Usually, when we think of the word fight we think of it in human terms—fists, weapons, assaults, arguments, physical brutality. However, the good fight of faith is not a physical fight, but a spiritual one.

Although the Christian life is not always easy and without resistance, when we follow God’s proven battle plan, we are assured of victory. Yes, we are in a fight, but it’s a good fight worth fighting.

To fight the good fight of faith means that we stand firmly anchored in faith, holding on to God’s promises regardless of what may confront us. This fight is not a gloomy, hopeless struggle for the believer, because we know that we are more than conquerors in Christ!

Therefore, we must be encouraged to draw our strength from God for every battle we face, knowing that the battle is really not ours, but the battle is the Lord’s. This is the only good fight in which we win!
